Who We Are, What We Do.

Who we are:

Q.L.P. was founded in 1992 by Chuck Mangi, a 27 year IBM veteran manufacturing, systems and marketing professional.

Phil Lashley provides most of the network savvy to Q.L.P. He is comfortable with LANtastic, NT, OS/2 LAN and has converted from Banyan Vines. Phil and Chuck have been working together for over 20 years.

In addition, Q.L.P. uses a number of other sub contractors to bring to bear whatever expertise is needed to solve your problem. In 1996 we utilized the services of 26 sub contractors for varying periods of time.

What we do:

Q.L.P. stands for "Quick Little Programs" and that is exactly what we set out to do. Programs that solve the clients needs without showing off our abilities. We have written programs with as little as 12 lines of code in less than one billable hour. Our most complex task was over 10,000 lines and allowed our client to win a very lucrative multi-year contract with NY City.

We write in MS Professional Basic and MS Visual Basic. This allows us to abide by the "Quick" in Q.L.P.

A public example of our work is the program NAMES on THE WALL. Information about this program can be found on this site, or on the Vietnam Veteran's Home Page or its mirror site.

While programming is how we started the business, we have grown by showing the flexibility that clients require. That flexibility has moved us successfully into the following areas:

  • Pre-purchase Consulting:

Pre-purchase consulting allows a client to use our knowledge of what's hot and what's not to make a more informed buying decision. We read a number of trade publications every month and go through virtually every good mail order catalog that comes to us. We are generally up on not only the products in the market place but more importantly we know who has been rated tops in quality and customer service and who is on the bottom. Don't expect a quick response over the phone. It is much like asking someone "what car should I buy?". We need to know a little about you, how you want to handle problems (ALL PCs will have problems!), and what you want to do with the PC.

A key point in all of this is your assurance that we are not out to sell you anything except advice and assistance. We will provide shopping lists, side by side written comparisons and we have even gone shopping with clients so that they did not get blind sided by the merchant. If we do purchase a PC for you then you will clearly see on our invoice separate items for our time and for the products purchased. In every case you will see a copy of our bill from the supplier.

  • Installation and Set Up:

Most PCs actually work directly out of the box the first time. Most. Our experience, even with the best brands is a dead-on-arrival rate of 5-6%. Of that number about half can be fixed by our professionals on the spot.

Most PCs ship with a great deal of "free" software partially installed. Much of that is "teaser" programs.. "If you like the little you see, send $99.95 for the rest of the program". We can help you weed out the wheat from the chaff. Recently we worked on an IBM laptop that shipped with a 540 MB hard drive. On arrival it had 50 MB of space left!! A great deal of the used space was taken with a set of programs that told you how great your purchase was. We recovered over 300 MB of space within a few minutes.

  • Training:

Training may be the single strongest point we have relative to the competition. Chuck Mangi, the owner, personally has instructed 1000+ students, some in formal stand-up classes but many in one-on-one personalized instruction. Students have run the gamut from home PC users to CEOs of Fortune 50 companies. We'll work with you at your office, at ours, at your home or even in your corporate jet.

  • Troubleshooting:

Something wrong with your PC? If we can fix your problem over the phone in a few minutes and that's all it takes we will be as pleased as you are.

When something goes wrong often it is not as bad as it may seem to the user. We are not in business to do hardware maintenance but we do work closely with a number of local maintenance companies. We will even take your PC to them for you.

However, when the real problem is the software or even a user problem, we will be happy to come to you and get the PC going again.

  • Upgrading:

Upgrading your PC? We can help, but don't be surprised if we ask you why you "need" to do it in the first place. Our responsibility is to get the right software and hardware for your needs onto your PC. If we really do not think the upgrade is going to accomplish anything more than an ego trip, we will tell you so... and if you want to go ahead anyway, we'll gladly help you.

  • Sub-Contract Services:

While we prefer to work directly with our clients so that we can take total responsibility for the job, we have often sub-contracted to other consultants to help them accomplish the mission.

We have been on a PC swat team to install over 200 new PCs at a local hospital in one weekend.

Q.L.P. professionals have worked for a local PC manufacturer to help them assemble new PCs in a crunch. It was a valuable learning experience for us.

We have provided a number of professionals to a midsize consulting firm to handle a large software migration with a very short fuse. And we have a multi-year relationship with one of the leading national consulting firms to supply programmers for critical applications.

We are more than willing to work with any other consulting firm.
